Linguistic Data Consortium for Indian Languages (LDC-IL) has organized Ten Day regional Orientation cum Training Programme on Natural Language Processing in collaboration with Department of Kannada studies, Kannada University, Hampi, Vidyaranya from 14th December to 23rd December 2011.

10-day NLP Orientation cum Training Programme was organized with certain goals such as - to create awareness of NLP among Kannada students and junior lecturers, to spread the knowledge of NLP, to equip students to work or pursue research in language technology and to promote technology development in Indian Languages. 

The inaugural function of the programme was held on 14th December at 11.00 am in Pampa Sabhangana, Kannada University, Hampi. The Vice Chancellor of Kannada University Hampi Dr. A Murigeppa presided over the inaugural function. Dr. Ashok Kumar Ranjere, HOD of the Department of Kannada Language Studies, Kannada University Hampi, had given welcome speech. Welcome address was followed by key Note Address by Dr. L Ramamurthy, the Head, Reader cum Research Officer, LDCIL, CIIL, Mysore. The whole inaugural event was anchored by Dr. Mahadevaiah, working as Assistant Professor, department of Kannada Language studies, Kannada University Hampi. Finally Ms. Malini Abhyankar, junior Resource Person, LDC-IL, CIIL, Mysore has proposed vote of thanks.

More than 30 participants had taken part in the orientation programme. The students were from Kannada University and Mysore University.

Classes were started from 14th December at 12.00 pm. On 14th we had 3 classes and from 15th Dec to 22nd Dec 4 classes were conducted. Every day we had 2 sessions and each session had 2 classes therefore everyday we had 4 classes and the duration of each class was 1.15 hours. Every expert (external) and experts (internal) delivered lectures on their respective subjects.

Linguistic Data Consortium for Indian Languages invited 9 language and NLP experts from different Universities, Institutions to deliver lectures on core Linguistics and Natural Language Processing. They are as follows

  1. Dr. Kavi Narayan Murthy, Department of Computer and Information Science, University Of Hyderabad delivered lectures on ‘Introduction to Artificial Intelligence’, and ‘Different approaches to NLP’.
  2. Dr. B. Mallikarjun, Rtd. Reader cum research officer, CIIL, Mysore, delivered lectures on ‘Introduction to corpus Linguistics’, and ‘Balanced corpus’.
  3. Dr. H.M. Maheshwaraiah, Dr. R.C.Hiremath Institute of Kannada Studies, Karnataka University, Dharwad, delivered lectures on ‘Language and Linguistics’, and ‘Basic Phonetics’.
  4. Dr. Rajeshwari  Maheshwaraiah,Vice Principal, Karnataka Arts College, Dharwad- 1, delivered lecture on ‘Basic Morphology’.
  5. Dr. Rajendra Nayak, Dr. R. C. Hiremath Institute of Kannada studies Karnataka University, Dharwad, delivered lecture on ‘Kannada Derivational Morphology’
  6. Dr. C.S. Ramachandra, Department of Linguistics, Kuvempu Institute of Kannada Studies, Manasa Gangotri, Mysore University, Mysore, delivered lectures on ‘Grammatical Categories in Kannada’ and ‘Models for Morphological Analysis’.
  7. Dr. Ravindranatha B.K, Department of Linguistics, Kuvempu Institute of Kannada Studies, Manasa Gangotri, Mysore University, Mysore, delivered lecture on ‘Basic Semantics’.
  8. Dr. Manjulakshi L, National Translation Mission, CIIL, Mysore, delivered lectures on ‘Kannada Dictionary making’ and ‘Problems in Translation’.
  9. Lakshmi R, Mysore, delivered lectures on ‘Steps in Machine Translation’ (lecture-1 and lecture-2)

Some lectures on NLP were delivered by LDC-IL Project Staff

Mr. Bharata Raju A, spoke on ‘Corpus Annotation’, ‘Different corpus analysis tools’ and ‘Automatic Speech recognition’.
Mrs. Manasa, spoke on ‘Text-To-Speech’ and ‘Automatic transliteration’.
Ms. Vijayalaxmi F. Patil, spoke on ‘Parts of Speech Tagging’ and ‘Morph Analyzer’.
Ms. Malini Abhyankar, spoke on ‘Speech segmentation and Annotation’ and ‘Spell checker’.
Mr. Rajesha N, spoke on ‘Optical Character Recognition’ and ‘Encoding’.

Some lectures on core Linguistics were given by staff of the Department of Kannada Language Studies, Kannada University, Hampi

Dr. Ashok Kumar Ranjere, spoke on ‘Kannada Phonology’.
Dr. Sambamurthy spoke on ‘Morphophonemic Rules in Kannada’.
Dr. Panduranga Babu spoke on ‘Kannada Inflectional Morphology’.
Dr. Mahadevayya spoke on ‘Basic Syntax’.

On 23rd Dec (Friday) discussion was arranged to get the feedback from the participants. We had a valedictory function and we invited Honorable Dr. A Murigeppa the Vice Chancellor of Kannada University Hampi. Ms. Vijayalaxmi F. Patil, Research Assistant (Senior), LDC-IL, CIIL, Mysore had given welcome speech. Some of the local participants namely Mr. G. Megharaj, Mr. Kumar C, Mr. Satyamurthy and Ms. Shamala D.M shared their 10 days experience of the orientation programme. Dr. A. Murigeppa spoke on the orientation and he encouraged the participants and students to work on NLP for Kannada Language and at last the orientation cum training programme ended with formal vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Ashok Kumar Ranjere.
